Rags to Riches drops out of CCA Oaks

Rags to Riches, who became only the third filly in history to win the Belmont Stakes when she beat Preakness winner Curlin last month, will not run in Saturday’s 91st edition of the Grade 1, $300,000 Coaching Club American Oaks, trainer Todd Pletcher said Monday morning.

Pletcher said the three-year-old filly spiked a temperature and would not be able to properly prepare for the 1 ¼-mile CCA Oaks. She will likely point for the Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama for three-year-old fillies at a mile and a quarter at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, August 18.

“We’re going to pass on the Coaching Club American Oaks,” Pletcher said. “Her temperature was 101 degrees, which is not high, but a little beyond the normal range. We galloped her this morning. We are going to take the conservative approach. She hasn’t quite seemed herself the last couple of days. We won’t breeze her without her being 100 percent. Our plan is now to point for the Alabama and the Breeders’ Cup. There are too many big races out there. If we were going to miss one race, this is the one to miss. But I am disappointed that we didn’t get to run her back because a lot of people were looking forward to seeing her again her at Belmont Park”
