Don’t look now, but there’s
a new sheriff in town and his name is Cody
Autrey. After teaching horses in Kentucky
and Texas, the youngster has followed the
tip of Horace Greeley to go west young
man as he makes his first foray into California
racing at Del
Mar.
Only those that have a national menu will
be aware of this guy, so his runners could
offer some great horse
betting opportunities early in the
meet and, since he has some time-honored
experience dealing with synthetic surfaces,
he could have a heads up on some of the
other conditioners.
According to Randy Jennings in the Dallas
Morning News, horses just run through Autrey’s
blood.
When he was just a teenager, he was handicapping
and accepting tips for his winners. The
pedigree is there for this kid to succeed.
His grandfather, Willard Davis, was a Hall
of Fame cutting horse trainer and, at the
tender age of 9, when his mom was dating
a trainer at Ruidoso
Downs in New Mexico, Cody got hooked.
After about a year he knew deep down in
his heart that racing is what he wanted
to do.
He also learned at the foot of high percentage
trainer Bubba Cascio, who used to work
horses at Trinity Meadows.
“I used to joke in those days, Cody
often made my car payment,” said
his mother, Monica. “Horse racing
was just in his blood. He poured over a
Racing Form the way other kids would study Major
League Baseball statistics. The day
Cody turned 21, everybody at Lone
Star celebrated, because they didn’t
have to bet for Cody anymore.”
Autrey’s runners always seem to
be well placed. From the get-go his stock
has always been well intentioned. He only
won with 2 of 10 runners his first year
of training but 40% of his runners were
in the money. Three years ago that figure
jumped to 59% and he’s popping at
60% this year.
These are the things to watch for live
Autrey runners. Once he gets a horse going
in the right direction, he keeps them going
good. He wins with back-to-back winners
just under 30%. When he takes the blinkers
off runners, it’s a tip off for success.
Those runners can pop at over 50% when
things break right.
When he brings horses back quickly, you
have to jump on the bandwagon. But go the
other way with his comeback runners, as
they often need a race before showing their
top talent.
His second time starters off a layoff
of about 180 days has produced a ridiculous
flat-bet profit and if Cody dips in for
a claim, just flat out double up.
His first and second off the claim runners
usually pop at just under 30%.
Finally, one of the keys to Autrey’s
success is the guys that are putting up
the money. His owners are like vultures,
they circle and they pounce.
Autrey: “I’ve got the guys
behind me that want to win. They don’t
talk about running second. And they don’t
worry if we lose one to a claim. With the
size of the purses, you just about have
to win. If you run third twice, you’re
losing money.”
That may not be so true in California,
but with that kind of attitude, one can
easily see why this guy is one to watch.
