The third of six Breeders’ Cup
Challenge days takes place on Sunday, August
19 at Del Mar.
If the races are as competitive as they
were last weekend at Arlington Park, have
your bankroll locked and loaded this weekend
where the Turf Meets the Surf.
Jambalaya won the Arlington Million, paying
$17.20 for the win, and earned a trip to
the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Royal Highness
was the upset winner of the Beverly D.
Stakes, paying $20.40 and earning a spot
in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare
Turf. Shamdinan also earned a spot in the
Turf by winning the Grade 1 Secretariat
Stakes, paying $11.60.
That’s three double digit payoffs
and there could be more of the same this
Sunday at Del Mar.
The marquee event is the Grade 1 Pacific
Classic. The winner of the race will automatically
qualify for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Last year’s winner Lava Man is back
to defend his title. In his final prep
for Sunday’s race, he worked six
furlongs in 1:14.95 over the polytrack
at Del Mar on Saturday.
After the drill, trainer Doug O’Neill
said, "That'll work. I loved it. He
did it nice and easy, which was the idea.
And, he finished up strong and galloped
out strong. It was a typical workout for
him. I'd call it impressive. I'm nothing
but happy with what I saw. He did what
we wanted him to do."
Lava Man will likely go off as the favorite.
Entries will be taken on Wednesday morning
and it looks like the gate will be full
on Sunday. 23 horses were nominated for
the race.
In addition to Lava Man, those likely
to show up on Sunday include A.P. Xcellent,
Arson Squad, Awesome Gem, Big Booster,
Hello Sunday, Molengao, Porfido, Salty
Humor, Sun Boat and the 3-year-olds Tiago,
Albertus Maximus and Time Squared.
Lava Man is the one to beat. The defending
champion has won 17 of 40 career starts
and earned $5,189,706 in his career.
Among those with the best shot of beating
the likely favorite include A.P. Xcellent,
who missed beating Lava Man by just a nose
in the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup on June
30; Big Booster, who was third in the Gold
Cup; Molengao, who was fourth in the Gold
Cup and ran second behind Lava Man in the
Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap on March 3;
and Sun Boat, recent winner of the Grade
2 San Diego Handicap.
There are two other “Win and You’re
In” races at Del Mar on Sunday, the
Grade 2 Pat O’Brien Handicap, with
the winner earning a spot in the Breeders’ Cup
Dirt Mile, and the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile,
the winner earning a berth in the Breeders’ Cup
Mile.
The Pat O’Brien will be contested
at seven furlongs on the main track. The
race closed with 13 nominations.
Bilo comes into the race off a game win
in the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap. The
top three finishers from the Grade 1 Bing
Crosby on July 29 are nominated: In Summation,
Greg’s Gold, and Bordonaro.
Also possible are Absolute Glory, Midnight
Lute, Pauillac, Publication, Salty Humor,
and Siren Lure.
The third Breeders’ Cup Challenge
race at Del Mar on Sunday is the Grade
2 Del Mar Mile, which closed with 14 nominations.
Among the possible are Becrux, Bilo, Captain
Kurt, Crossing the Line, Frank the Barber,
Isipingo, Lang Field, Lewis Michael, Out
of Control, Porto Santo, Soar With Eagles,
Yate’s Black Cat, and Zann.
Del Mar will also offer a $1 million guaranteed
Pick 6 on Sunday.
Plenty of reasons to hit the surf this
Sunday. And we won’t even need sunblock.
